Why does a small air gap make a magnetic crane stronger?
Fit the magnetic circuit and energize it
The winding creates magnetic flux through the core and plate. The air gap dominates reluctance; closing it increases flux and magnetic pressure until the iron saturates.
Ideal closed magnetic circuit; 400-turn coil, 12 Ω, 0.002 m² pole area, 0.12 m core, relative permeability 1000. B is capped at 1.4 T. Fringing, remanence and heating are omitted; nonmagnetic targets have no lifting force in this model.
Lift a 5 kg steel plate with a force greater than its weight.
Lift the steel plate against its weight.
