Why can a spinning rim keep a machine moving?
Fit the components, then test the mechanism.
A flywheel stores rotational kinetic energy. Its inertia grows with rim mass and radius squared, and stored energy grows with rotational speed squared. A fixed drag torque steadily removes angular momentum.
Thin-rim approximation. Hub inertia omitted. Constant opposing drag torque, with rotation stopped at zero speed.
Store 500 J and coast for at least 10 s.
Compare stored energy and coast time.
