Complete the loop and supply compressor work.
A heat pump moves existing heat rather than creating all of it from electricity. In heating mode it takes heat from outdoors and adds compressor work before delivering heat indoors. A reversing valve swaps the exchanger roles for cooling.
Conceptual reversible vapor-compression cycle, fixed selected heating COP. In heating, indoor heat=COP×work; outdoor heat=(COP−1)×work. In cooling those exchanger heat flows reverse. Real COP varies with weather.
