Fit the track, wiper and load before energizing
The wiper selects two lengths of resistive track. A connected load lies in parallel with the lower length, changing the effective resistance ratio.
Ideal 1 kΩ linear three-terminal potentiometer with a resistive output load; the lower track and load are parallel. Contact resistance and track power rating are omitted.
Set the loaded output within 0.25 V of 6 V from a 12 V supply.
Compare loaded and unloaded wiper voltage.
