Why does a river bend keep changing?
Place the marker at a labelled bank and release water.
In a typical meander, faster flow near the outer bank erodes and carries material away. Slower flow near the inner bank deposits sediment. The balance shifts with flow, sediment and the river’s geometry.
Conceptual meander cross section, width/area chosen for demonstration. Relative sediment transport index, not a landscape forecast. Typical outer-bank erosion and inner-bank deposition vary with real river geometry.
Identify erosion on the outer bank and deposition on the inner bank.
Compare erosion and deposition at opposite river banks.
