Why does a spring stretch farther under a heavier load?
Fit the components, then test the mechanism.
A spring pushes back in proportion to its extension. At rest that restoring force balances the load’s weight. Energy accumulates quadratically as the spring stretches.
Massless Hookean spring in static equilibrium. Elastic range limited to 0.3 m; no plastic deformation.
Stretch the spring to 100 mm, within 5 mm.
Compare spring extension with load and stiffness.
